Overnight Twitter had a series of high profile accounts, including Bill Gates, Elon Musk and Kim Kardashian, breached in order to post a tweet asking for donations to an anonymous Bitcoin wallet.
It’s now believed that the accounts were taken over via a highly coordinated social engineering attack on a Twitter employee.
Motherboard first reported details of the attack, with screenshots of Twitter’s internal tools being posted to a series of hacker forums detailing how the accounts were being taken over.
Twitter has since taken steps to remove posts and images regarding the hack from their own platform as the conduct a deeper investigation.
