Steam will start charging GST from July

In an email sent out to developers, Steam has confirmed it will be adding the 10% Goods and Services Tax to all purchases made in Australia in July.

Buying Steam games was already pricy for Australians, it’s now about to get worse. The only possible silver lining: will localised pricing in Australian dollars come next?

The deadline for Joe Hockey’s 2015 policy of international online retailers charging GST for Australian’s is July 1, 2017 according to this old Cnet article. Kotaku fail to mention that fact.

It sucks but it’s Steam towing the political line. It’s also probably a bit of a “fuck you” after the ACCC went to town on them fining them $3m last year.
