Uber now legal in Victoria but…

All commercial passenger vehicle operators will be levied $2 per trip to pay for the transition to the new system, which will include support for existing taxi licence holders.

The government expects the levy to raise $44 million a year.

Two pieces of legislation will be introduced to allow the changes to proceed.

The government will buy back a maximum of two taxi licences per licence holder.

Taxi fares will also be deregulated.

So every ride I take (taxi or Uber) will be $2 more expensive to:

  1. Pay for this ridiculous buy back scheme of taxi licences (which I’m sure a lot of 2+ owners will be “gifting” extras to relatives soon)
  2. Fill the government’s pockets, whom now deregulating taxi fares have even less work to do for more revenue.

Yay?!
