New USB plug in development

Matt Burns at TechCrunch:

Our long worldwide nightmare is almost over. The next USB plug will finally be reversible just like Apple’s Lightning connector. No more blindly jamming the connector towards the receptacle, just knowing that it’s not going to work. In the near future, the plug will always be the right side up.

There’s a few interesting physical features of this new USB Type-C plug. For one, it’ll be on both ends of the cable, instead of the Type-A to Type-B situation we have now. Secondly, the plug itself will be reversible (like a Lightning connector), and is similar in size to the micro-USB plugs of today. Sadly, no picture yet for us to ogle, but there’s a press release (PDF) with more detail if you’re so inclined.

Sure, there’s going to an awkward period of transition as always, but ultimately it will mean USB-equipped devices (like laptops and tablets) can start getting even thinner. Actually, this post has got me wondering which port is next. Somewhere, an engineer is eyeballing that massive 3.5mm headphone jack and wondering how to get rid of it.
