Apple’s New Mavericks OS X Is Free

Lauren Goode at All Things D:

Oh, and by the way: The new OS is free. It’s available in a single-step update, even for Macs from 2007. It launches today.

The price of OS X upgrades has been steadily on the downhill (10.8 was AUD$20.99, Lion was AUD$31.99), but going free is a big step.

Also surprising; this update is available for older Macs still on Snow Leopard 10.6. The full list is as follows:

  • iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)

If you’ve got an older Mac lying around go check out the minimum system requirements for yourself. You may be surprised.
