Twitter launches Moments in Australia

The Moments system is designed so that users who like the idea of a live update platform for news and sport can get access to the content they want without having to get their heads around the idiosyncrasies of hashtags, retweets and lists.

In addition to the Moments created by Twitter’s in-house team, the company will also authorise local partners to be able to curate and publish their own.

The partners so far include the ABC, BuzzFeed, the NRL, the AFL and The Project. Companies will also be able to pay to create “sponsored” moments.

I had no idea what “Moments” actually was until today and the icon finally emerged in my official Twitter client. I liken it to a mashup of Snapchat stories and Apple’s News app. The difference being that the content is peppered with tweets relating to the moment/story.

Moments only works if you’re using Twitter’s official app and it’s unlikely to gain integration into 3rd party clients such as the popular Tweetbot.

It will be interesting to see just how successful Moments is for Twitter, which has been having problems growing beyond its plateaued user base for some time now.
