{"id":3545,"date":"2014-11-01T10:57:59","date_gmt":"2014-11-01T00:57:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reckoner.com.au\/?p=3545"},"modified":"2014-11-01T11:04:41","modified_gmt":"2014-11-01T01:04:41","slug":"notes-from-the-floor-pax-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reckoner.com.au\/features\/notes-from-the-floor-pax-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"Notes from the floor: PAX 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.reckoner.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/27132744\/IMG_1097-0.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1097-0.JPG\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m standing here in the Melbourne Exhibition Centre surrounded by tens of thousands of like-minded people.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This place is blaring on a Saturday morning; the boomy bass of the Just Dance 2015 booth, the constant chattering match commentary from the <a href=\"http:\/\/battlecrythegame.com.au\">Bethesda Battlecry<\/a> booth. Off in the distance I can hear frantic yelling from the Wargaming stage. A man is throwing shirts and lanyards into the audience. <\/p>\n<p>Speaking of Battlecry, I&#8217;m writing this on my phone while I&#8217;m in the queue to play it. Take a look:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.reckoner.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/27132749\/IMG_1124.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1124.JPG\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a new free to play game that&#8217;s coming next year. Australia &amp; NZ is the first region to get a beta for this game, which is nice. <\/p>\n<p>This place is kind of disconnected from time and place; it&#8217;s 11:30am right now, but it could be 8pm, or 3am. When you&#8217;re on the exhibition floor, you have no idea. <\/p>\n<p>You will also queue a lot here, and that makes time pass in strange ways. You&#8217;ll spend half an hour on your phone, bored out of your skull, in order to play a new game frantically for 5-10 minutes. <\/p>\n<p>You want hype? Come here. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.reckoner.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/27132747\/IMG_1115.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1115.JPG\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m pretty relaxed though &#8212; we had our panel yesterday, and so now I have the whole weekend to just enjoy the show and soak up some stuff. <\/p>\n<p>Of course, the other facet of PAX is the panel and talks. So far I&#8217;ve seen a few and they are a very different experience. Much more chilled, and you can sit, relax and take in the opinions of smart people, or watch some Omeganauts play (the conference-wide game tournament). <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.reckoner.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/27132748\/IMG_1111.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1111.JPG\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You want knowledge? Go there. <\/p>\n<p>If you wander outside, you&#8217;ll find cosplayers hanging out on the lawn outside the centre. Taking photos, chatting to each other, comparing costumes. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.reckoner.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/27132743\/IMG_1114.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1114.JPG\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You want community? It&#8217;s there. It&#8217;s all over the place. <\/p>\n<p>Anyway, I gotta go.
