{"id":3054,"date":"2014-05-30T16:32:50","date_gmt":"2014-05-30T06:32:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reckoner.com.au\/?p=3054"},"modified":"2014-05-30T16:32:50","modified_gmt":"2014-05-30T06:32:50","slug":"queensland-likes-uber-no-wait-they-hate-uber","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reckoner.com.au\/news\/queensland-likes-uber-no-wait-they-hate-uber\/","title":{"rendered":"Queensland Likes Uber&#8230; No Wait, They Hate Uber"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>\n  Queensland has followed in NSW&#8217;s footsteps by banning start-up taxi service company Uber.<\/p>\n<p>  The government issued a cease-and-desist notice last week to the web-based driver hire company, which allows non-taxi drivers to offer a taxi service.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Smash-cut foward to yesterday, with Queensland premier Campbell Newman talking about Uber <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/digital-life\/digital-life-news\/queensland-government-gives-uber-rideshare-the-green-light-20140529-zrrm2.html\">on ABC radio<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  &#8220;We are a deregulation-minded government,&#8221; he told ABC radio.<\/p>\n<p>  &#8220;We don&#8217;t believe in more red tape and regulation unless it&#8217;s absolutely necessary.&#8221;\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He said he had some concerns about the safety of the service though compared to traditional cabs&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  &#8220;Yes [Uber] has safeguards in there as well, but I&#8217;d prefer to use a ridgy didge cab.&#8221;\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Firstly: I haven&#8217;t heard the phrase &#8216;ridgy didge cab&#8217; ever, and strewth, it&#8217;s hilarious.<\/p>\n<p>Second: So wait, what? The premier is cool with Uber overall, but government is not?<\/p>\n<p>Smash-cut to a few hours later&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  Newman had earlier said the government didn&#8217;t believe in red tape and regulation unless it was absolutely necessary, but later updated his advice following advice from [QLD Transport Minister Scott] Emerson&#8217;s office.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I guess this particular bit of red tape is &#8216;absolutely necessary&#8217; then.
