In their annual “Made by Google” event, the big G announced a bunch of cool stuff and whilst the Pixel 5 was announced, it could hardly be classified as exciting.

At its heart the new Pixel 5 is little more than an expected bump to its specs with the introduction of 5G and a new wide angle lens on the rear. It’s saving grace being of course a tight package from the people behind the OS run on the majority of smartphones in the world for less than a thousand bucks at just A$999.

On price alone the Pixel 5 makes itself a solid competitor, but does little to stand apart from the Fold and new Microsoft Duo when it comes to innovative hardware.

Spec wise you’ll find buried alongside a Snapdragon 765G SOC – 8GB of RAM, 128GB storage, dual rear cameras (wide and ultra-wide), a 4080mAh battery, rear fingerprint sensor, wireless charging & Titan M chip. This is all underneath a new 6″ AMOLED with a 90Hz refresh rate.

The rear cameras are both wide-angles, the first a 12MP f/1.7 and a 16MP f/2.2. There’s no optical telephoto lens on the 5, instead Google opting to use their software prowess to fill in the zoom gaps.

Available to pre-order now from Google’s store, the Pixel 5 is available in “Just Black” & “Sorta Sage”, shipping on October 15th.
