US FDA Tells 23andme DNA Testing Service to Stop Temporarily

ArsTechnica:

Last Friday, the Food and Drug Administration sent a letter to the most popular personal genomics service, 23andMe, ordering the company to stop selling its genetic testing kits. According to the FDA’s letter, the company has been advertising that its tests offer diagnostic information for a variety of human conditions, placing them in the category of a “medical device” and thus within the agency’s jurisdiction.

I’ve been a 23andme user for a few years, and really like the service. Whilst 23andme does a lot of interpretation of what your DNA tells them about you, it’s pretty obvious that what it says is just a guide and generalist info and that if you have anything you want to know further, go talk to a doctor. Hopefully 23andme can comply with the FDA’s requests.
