In the week that was September 2nd to September 8th, 2018:

Intro

Hello everyone, my name’s Raj Deut and it’s time to take a look back at the tech news in the week that was:

September 2nd to September 8th, 2018.

Stories

Canon made a large product announcement this week, taking the covers off their first full frame mirrorless camera the Canon EOS R. It’s kind of a big deal, the camera represents a shift into professional photography pushing aside the long lived champion SLR models.

The EOS R is essentially a smaller, lighter mirrorless 5D Mark4 and brings with it a 30.3MP sensor, dual pixel AF and Canon’s Digic 8 image processor. It also has a new RF lens mount and a slew of expensive new lenses that have a new control ring allowing you to control their aperture without using dials on the camera body.

The new model will be available for sale in late October and will set you back US$2,299 for the body only or US$3,399 for a kit with a 24-105mm lens.

Apple have been quiet ahead of their September 12th iPhone event where they’re expected to confirm a myriad of rumours and leaks that have been circulating over the past weeks.

All but confirmed by 9to5Mac.com a gold version of the iPhone X is expected along with a 6.5″ OLED version said to be called the iPhone X MAX.

Other announcements expected from the event include the new Apple Watch series 4 and the long overdue AirPower matt.

Clamouring for attention & seemingly doing everything to leak info as much info as possible ahead of it October 9th unveiling Google have left new versions of their Pixel 3 phones everywhere for people to “find” and share.

The latest absent minded Pixel 3 tester left a working version in the back of a Lyft and in doing so has confirmed a bunch of specs as well as its enclosure which matches leaked photos from earlier in the year.

Now confirmed doubly so the Pixel 3 will come with dual 8MP cameras, Snapdragon 845 processor, 4GB of RAM & a 2915mAh battery.

And finally Amazon are splashed all over the news this week for a variety of reasons.

First, the company briefly hit the US trillion dollar mark before dipping back under and going back up again. Amazon is now the third company to hit the mark and second from the US, oh so closely beaten by Apple just weeks ago.

Since then, independent US senator Bernie Sanders introduced the Stop Bad Employers by Zeroing Out Subsidies or Stop BEZOS act to government calling on employers such as Amazon and Walmart to improve worker conditions and pay them an actual wage.

It appears Amazon’s woeful warehouse habits aren’t just limited to their US operations either. In a recent piece by Fairfax workers from their Melbourne warehouse have called it a “hellscape” and that they’ve “never worked anywhere as harsh”.
