Turns out Red’s “holographic” phone isn’t dead

To my, and largely the tech world’s surprise, Red held an event in Hollywood yesterday to offer a hands-on with their Hydrogen One smartphone. The new phone has a few standout features, including the potential to mount non-Red branded camera lenses and being larger than an iPhone Plus in size, but none more touted than its “holographic” display.

The display, which was working on the models at the event turn its regular 2560 x 1440 2D display into a 3D view using the phone’s two front facing cameras for tracking. Reportedly the functionality worked well however Red’s event stipulation was that no photos or videos be taken of not only the phone running in its 3D holographic mode but of the front facing side of the phone at all.

The Verge’s Dieter Bohn has a more extensive video hands-on where you can get a better understand of just how large this thing is going to be however his sentiments on the phone’s display are a littler underwhelming.
