Apple announces new 6th generation 9.7″ iPad at Education event

If the computer were invented today, what would it look like? It would be powerful enough for any task. So mobile you could take it everywhere. And so intuitive you could use it any way you wanted — with touch, a keyboard or even a pencil. In other words, it wouldn’t really be a ‘computer’. It would be the new iPad.

The new iPad is exactly that… a new iPad. There’s nothing particularly amazing or exciting with the big reveal being somewhat of a bigger let down for most.

The new 9.7″ iPad keeps the same form factor and pricing as its predecessor. It’s largest change includes support for the Apple Pencil, which for the first time is now able to be used on a non “Pro” iOS device.

Under the hood the 6th generation iPad also gets a processor bump to use Apple’s more recent A10 Fusion chip and is available with or without the cellular module.

With no “Smart Connector” the new iPad cannot work with Apple’s Smart Keyboard and relies on 3rd party solutions, showing off a US$49 keyboard from Logitech at the event.

Educators and students will receive a slight discount on the iPad (US$20 on the base) but of bigger significance they’ll also receive a large increase in their iCloud storage limit with the free tier going from 5GB to 200GB.

The new 6th gen Apple iPad is available in stores today starting from A$469 for Wi-Fi only 32GB version up to A$799 for the Wi-Fi + LTE 128GB. The Apple Pencil remains a separate purchase at A$145.
