NBN Co has been busy lately – DOCSIS 3.1, Fibre on demand plans & HFC trials

NBN Co announced a few things recently:

  • DOCSIS 3.1 and potentially gigabit speeds will begin in 2017 for those connected via HFC.
  • The HFC networks Optus & Telstra (and iiNet’s small rural HFC networks) owned will start being subsumed into NBN Co now with trials in Emu Plains in NSW, Redcliffe, Slacks Creek and Merrimac in QLD. Wide spread migration of customers onto NBN HFC will begin in mid-2016.
  • For those stuck on copper, some relief may arrive in the form of “fibre on demand“, where you can pay for your copper infrastructure to be upgraded to fibre. Will cost $300 for an individual to be assessed for fibre, then the actual cost of upgrading to be determined on a case by case basis. On average it’s estimated to be approx $4,300.
